From NOLA to NYC: The surrealist inspired collection from Canary Club X DSNY

Back in the early 20th century, two game-changing artistic movements, Dadaism and Surrealism, burst onto the scene, leaving an indelible mark on culture. Dadaism reveled in whimsy, gleefully demolishing traditional art norms and embraced meaninglessness and absurdity. Surrealism, on the other hand, delved into experience and feeling, seamlessly bridging the conscious and subconscious through dreamy, often nonsensical imagery. These movements embodied a collective rebellion against the constraints of logic and reason, giving a figurative middle-finger to conventional rules.

Fast forward almost a century, and here at DSNY, we find ourselves in a familiar space—bucking the trend of the expected on a quest to find our most authentic selves, and doing our best to relish the journey along the way. Finding joy in the process is a whole lot easier when you stumble upon people and places that champion a whimsical, bold way of life. Enter our pals and newest collaborators at the Canary Club (Lower East Side), who have created a space directly inspired by dadaism and surrealism that beckons you to be unabashedly bold.

Inspired by the vibes and spirit of New Orleans nightlife, the Canary Club stands tall as a unique New York Supper and Music club—a haven for every facet of a night out, from sipping cocktails to late-night bites. It's packed full of colors and exotic warmth and a place where losing track of time over dinner or swaying to jazz tunes becomes second nature. The ambiance is a spontaneous, humorous, and liberating experience designed to make you feel something.

Taking all this inspiration to heart, we set out to design two garments that not only pay homage to the club's motifs but enhance them. So, without further ado, let us introduce the Canary Club x DSNY capsule. The Long Sleeve Tee, crafted from 100% organic cotton, sports a vibrant yellow that complements the CC's green walls, featuring graphic elements straight out of a Salvador Dalí painting. The Uniform Bowling Top, made from eucalyptus tree pulp, showcases custom embroidery and elements inspired by the CC logo.

We're unabashed romantics—firm believers that life itself is a form of art. And if life is art, then an experience where sophistication effortlessly transitions into a wild night out is our closest brush with surrealism. We've all been there—the good food leading to great conversations, evolving into an impromptu dance escapade, culminating in a sunrise stroll home. These are experiences that might leave gaps in our memory, but the feeling they evoke? That's what stays with us.
