Dinner Service + Swept Away: The Avett Brother's Tale of Tragedy & Honesty
Inspiration can come from anywhere—it’s all about where you choose to look. In today’s age of instant answers and endless information, we often forget the value of the journey itself. It’s in the experience that we uncover the emotions, nuances, and empathy that truly connect us. When we strip away the bullet points and tidy conclusions, we open ourselves to something easily forgotten: plain-old, natural humanity.
Take the story of the Mignonette. In 2004, the Avett Brothers released their third album, Mignonette, named after the ill-fated English yacht that sank off the coast of Africa in the 1880s. The shipwreck left its four-man crew stranded on a lifeboat, leading to one of the most infamous examples of the “Custom of the Sea.” This sailor’s code accepted the drawing of lots to decide who would be sacrificed—and cannibalized—for the survival of the group in dire circumstances.
In the case of the Mignonette, no lots were drawn. Instead, the cabin boy was killed and eaten by the others, despite the captain’s objections. Consumed with guilt, the captain later confessed their crimes upon reaching safety. The surviving crew members were tried and found guilty of murder, their case becoming a grim testament to humanity under stress. Fear, courage, honesty, and desperation collided in a tragedy that reflected the darkest and most profound corners of human nature.
The Avett Brothers explored this haunting story through their music, and now they’ve taken it a step further and adapted its themes into a Broadway musical. Swept Away, which debuted on November 19, 2024, brings the narrative to life, telling the story of sailors on a whaling expedition. Their journey is fueled by hard work and whiskey, but when their ship capsizes, they’re forced to confront the depths of their own humanity in order to survive. The Avetts didn’t just aim to recount the tragedy—they wanted to honor the raw, unflinching honesty of its protagonist.
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Mignonette and the debut of Swept Away, we’re thrilled to introduce the Swept Away Sailor Jacket — A heavyweight canvas fisherman inspired jacket. Featuring nautical brass metal clasps and embroidered patch details designed as a tribute to the Avett Brothers, a 14oz canvas made from 100% organic cotton and no chemical dyes or finishes used. All produced seed to sew within the same region in Turkey.
Here at Dinner Service, we strive to embrace the human element in everything we create. We know we’re far from perfect, but whether it’s shooting primarily on film to allow for the beauty of imperfection, or using natural, planet-safe materials instead of ultra-durable synthetics, we hold fast to the idea of “everything in its own perfect time, mistakes and all.” It’s a sharp contrast to the relentless pursuit of “perfectly forever.”
As the saying goes, we’re only human. And no, this isn’t an excuse for the bad decisions or careless words we’re all guilty of from time to time. It’s a reminder that in trying to control everything, we often lose sight of the bigger picture. Despite our desires for independence and self-sufficiency, the truth is: we need each other. Fulfillment doesn’t come from isolation. None of us can solve the world’s problems alone. We’re all in this together. And like our friends, the Avett Brothers, we might as well create something beautiful while we’re at it.
